so I might as well keep busy. I cleaned the 2nd floor earlier tonight and I thought I was tired at midnight. Nope, just laid there in bed for an hour. Back down the staircases I came and here goes:
Market day-I bought 3 small sausages from the porchetta (pork) vender couple. I cooked them up with long green and red peppers and garlic for dinner. It was horrible.
Yeah right, it was succulent and fabulous. Even though the sausages were small, less than 2 inches long and about an inch wide (see..size does NOT matter) I could only eat one.
What a lovely experience eating like this, fresh good food and you don't need a lot of it.
I took a very long walk along the Tiber late this afternoon. There is a change of weather coming, it was very windy, wild really, but the air was so mild and refreshing. It was good to be surrounded by nature.
I stopped at one point and sat along the edge, watched the ripples drifting to the right. I smelled oregano and realized it grows wild there. I passed a small corn field, the corn looks very dark and multicolored.
I also found a shell, a small spiral shell sitting a few inches to the left of my left foot. It is so cute, I love it.
The soil here is so different. It is much lighter in color, courser, and I don't know, foreign looking. ha! It isn't very pretty, (by U.S. standards, it looks like clay) but it produces good food. Everything must be organic as it starts to go bad pretty quickly. Another reason to shop a little at a time each day.
Two American bicycle dudes (one in his 40's the other in his 50's) showed up at the cafe today. I pretended I didn't understand what they were saying. One of them was rude, putting his feet up on a chair. They talked about cars and business...boring! They reminded me of guys I would see in a rich town on Long Island or in Hanover, kind of full of themselves. I was relieved when they left as I was finding hard to read. I didn't realize that being surrounded by a language I don't understand, I can focus on reading and writing. I am alone but in a crowd. Ta da!
Tomorrow starts the one and only festival for Umbertide for FOUR days. All the businesses have changed their store fronts to make it look like the 19th century. They even put burlap over the big umbrellas that shade the tables in the outdoor cafe.
I will dress as a peasant woman. Oh well, as long as I fit in with everyone. It is going to difficult to get any sleep for the next 4 nights, one of the tavernas is right here, pretty much in my lap. I guess I'll have to stay out with everyone each night.
I am sorry if I have repeated myself here, I cannot remember what I have already wrote. I am also keeping a journal and some things sound familiar to me.
It is supposed to be cooler tomorrow, in the 70's and a good chance of rain. The rest of the week looks grand, around 80. I have all the windows open all the time.
A friend of a friend is coming to pick me up at 10am tomorrow. Off to Cortona, Tuscany.
Oh gods, I forgot to tell...
Every night before I get into bed, I look out the side window in my bedroom. I can see the top of the round church and the moon. Last night there was no moon but I looked for a few minutes and there was a shooting star!!! Seriously! Can you believe it?
I do miss the quiet evenings of VT, I must admit.
I want to go back to Perugia very soon. I really loved that old church on hill.
Today is day 12, 18 more to go. I am beyond grateful.
I am learning a lot. Taking all these new risks, being courageous, facing fears, seeing beauty, I am changing...but in very subtle ways and from the inside.
It's as though I have access to these tiny rooms within myself and I am opening up the shudders. That was the sense I got while walking today. Oh and out of the blue I started singing that song from 'Santa Claus is Coming to Town'
"Put one foot in front of the other and soon you'll be walking 'cross the floooooo-or, put one foot in front of the other and soon you'll be walking out the door"
Patrizia walking through doors, tiny little doors in Umbertide.
I wish you all similar experiences.
I hear the rain out there. Pittapattapittapatta.
Ciao, ciao
